Te Araroa – Day 39

Starveall Hut to Mid Wairoa Hut

20.7 miles

Mile 1168.0

Despite my restless night due to the frigid wind and a pestering Weka pecking at my tent, today ended up being my highlight of the TA thus far.

From camp, the trail led straight up above tree line onto a rocky ridge line.

I followed the ridge line for a time, dipping down briefly to Slaty Hut to grab some water before heading back up.

As I made my way along the rocky crest I enjoyed sweeping views of the mountains, forest and distant ocean below.

The wind was blowing hard and cold, but the steep ascents kept me sweating.

The crazy steep ascents and descents to Little Rintoul and Mt Rintoul Summits were paid off by incredible vistas.

When I reached Rintoul Hut I found a family of wild goats grazing in its grass.

From there, the trail undulated up and down through forest as I made my way to Tarn Hut and Tarn Lake.

From the lake I crested one more mountain before plunging down to Mid Wairoa Hut.

Once again I was sad to discover the six bunk hut at capacity, so I pitched my tent on the grass nearby. I’m confused as to how these huts are so full, since I see hardly anyone during the day. Just bad luck I suppose.

Cheers!

  1. Gorgeous vistas, from your photos it looks like most of the trails go straight up to the peaks, no switchbacks, must be quite the workout! You look like you’re lovin’ this section, It’s great you’ve gotten this far, this is such beautiful unspoiled NZ wilderness.
