Te Araroa – Day 50

Methven to Bushcamp

19.8 miles

Mile 1408.6

At 5:55 AM I was waiting out front of the Methven visitor center in the dark with two other hikers. I resented the early wake up while in town, but at least I’d get a full day of hiking in. Five minutes later our bus pulled up and we headed off towards the trail.

It took about an hour to get to where the trail picked up again. It was only about 40 kilometers, but the narrow dirt road made the going slow.

By 7:00 AM I was making my way up towards Turton’s Saddle.

From the top of the climb it was easy going along a 4wd track.

I passed a neat A-frame hut and a rustic corrugated steel hut before the trail disappeared into a stream bed that I followed up into the mountains.

From atop Clint Hills Saddle I had an awesome vista of the valley below.

The trail followed a ridge line for a bit before plunging down to the valley floor.

I ended up making camp for the night along side a creek. There’s nothing better than falling asleep to the sound of rushing water.

Cheers!

  1. Great post! Somehow they just keep getting better/worse, depending on the side of the road you are on. I am just completely envious of your travels. βœ‹πŸΊπŸ₯žπŸ¦To you good sir.
