Lake Tekapo to Pines Campground
26.5 miles
Mile 1504.7
After a lazy morning of milling around the hostel, I hit the road just before 10:00 AM. I followed a dirt road out of town to join the Tekapo Canal.
I spent the next six hours walking along the canal. It was perfectly flat, and perfectly boring.
Towards the end of the canal walk I passed a salmon farm, which was really the only thing of note along the track.
When I reached Lake Pukaki, I joined a road that skirted it’s bank. The lake was a pretty thing to look at as I walked, it’s water was an incredible shade of blue.
Eventually I left the road for a bike path, which I followed for a few more miles before making camp.
This has got to be one of the most scenic locations I’ve ever camped…
Cheers!
Pretty awesome scenery, and great spots to camp! You must be close to some glaciers with all those milky waters from the glacial runoff, are you planning any side trips off trail?
I haven’t made any plans yet…I’m starting to get a bit homesick, so I’m playing with the idea of heading back to the states once I finish and hop on the AZT!
Snow on the AZT was pretty amazing this year. Should be lots of water. Ive been in Europe the past two weeks and missed it all. Keep me on your support list if you make it to the AZT.
Last week it snowed 35.9” in one day in Flagstaff, all time one day record, temps went down to -2°F, and up to 30” snow on the peaks in the Superstitions. Hopefully by the time you get back, it will be back to normal…but you may need snowshoes, Lol.
Jeeze! I guess water won’t be an issue!
Thanks Pete! I just got back to the states and will be getting started in a few days. Already looking forward to relaxing at the chairs you left on trail!
