AZT Day 24 – Mount Humphreys

Flagstaff to Bushcamp

18.5 miles

Mile 602.2

After spending yesterday hanging out with my parents, I found myself feeling prime and itching to get back on trail. Before heading back to the trailhead, we stopped for a tasty breakfast at the Toasted Owl.

By noon I was making my way towards Mt. Humphreys with my mom and dad in tow for the first mile.

About an hour in I joined a bypass trail that detoured around a section of the Arizona Trail that was closed for logging. Is spent the next two hours following a dirt road before rejoining the AZT near the base of Mt. Humphreys.

Back on the official trail, I wound my way through pines as I began to ascend the mountain.

Once I reached about 8000 ft I began seeing more and more snow, until the trail was completely hidden.

I made camp for the night next to Alfa Fia Tank, a mere mile from the ski resort Snowbowl.

Warm inside my cozy tent, I devoured the breakfast burrito I’d packed out from breakfast. It was nearly frozen, but still tasted delicious.

P.s. I woke the following morning to find snow falling hard with temperatures in the teens. I decided to wait it out in my tent rather than endure a miserable day of hiking. The snow persisted all day long, but I remained warm and dry inside my tent watching Netflix and snacking on trail mix.

Cheers!
