At 4:00 AM I woke to the beeping of my alarm, and thirty minutes later I was making my way through the cold dark morning.
By the time the sun rose I’d left the dirt roads and desert highlands behind for a forest of aspen, fir and pine.
I cruised through Kaibab National Forest making great time thanks to a flat trail and the promise of town food at the end of the day.
When I reached the Grandview Trailhead I climbed up the tower for my first glimpse of the canyon. Oooo aaaa….
As I crossed the dirt road leading back to the trail a mini van pulled up and rolled down its window. It turned out to be an elderly Danish couple who didn’t really speak English and were totally lost. They were trying to get to Page, but for some reason their navigation app had them taking backcountry dirt forest roads. I did my best to direct them, but who knows, they’re probably still lost….
From there it was another 10 miles or so until I arrived at the Grand Canyon’s gateway community, Tusayan, who’s name I have no idea how to pronounce.
I hit up the general store for beer and chocolate before swinging by Wendy’s for a loaded baked potato, cup o chili and a frosty. Yummmmy.
Having got what I needed from town, I headed back to the trail to find some real estate to throw my tent at.
I spent the evening getting fat while watching the highly anticipated season premier of Game of Thrones. Best night on trail yet!
Cheers!
