PCT Day 169

Bushcamp to Bushcamp

26 miles

Sobo mile 1287.1

Total mileage 3939.7

I woke up at 4am to get an early start towards Old Station, already planning the delicious breakfast I’d have at JJ’s Cafe.

An hour or so later I saw a pair of small eyes flicker up at me a few yards down the trail. I couldn’t make out what it was in the dark, until I saw it’s fluffy black tail with a white stripe running down it. Skunks make me more nervous than bears, so I gave it ample space as it crawled off trail.

The next few hours flew by as I made my way over flat exposed trail listening to 11-22-63, a Stephen King book about time travel and Kennedy’s assassination.

Just shy of 11am I rolled up to JJ’s Cafe. Once seated I ordered the California chicken scramble with a Marion berry milkshake and a coffee.

The food was fantastic. I ordered a reuben to go, paid the bill and walked a few more miles to the Hat Creek Resort, where I picked up my resupplying box, showered and washed my clothes.

When I returned from my shower I found a chipmunk balls deep in my reuben! I’d left it wrapped in tin foil on a picnic table next to my pack, and the fat rodent had torn into it. Hopefully that chipmunk doesn’t have rabies, because I still ate the half of the sandwich that was left.

Once I’d finished my chores, I headed back to the PCT to knock out a few more miles.

I ended up camping near the border to Lassen Volcanic National Park, because you’re required to have a bear canister if you camp within the park boundaries. During dinner I watched the first episode of The Sinner, a show on Netflix that Paige had recommended, I was instantly hooked! Dinner consumed and show watched, I went to sleep.

Cheers!
