Wrightwood Zero Day

Mile 363.2
Tony’s camper proved to be an excellent place to crash. We were beaten from the hike into Wrightwood, so sleep came easy.
We slept in until 8, packed up and walked into town to grab some breakfast.
On the way we swung by the Wrightwood Market to grab the famed $2 biscuits and gravy. They ended up costing no dollars thanks to the generosity of the cashier, thanks!!!
Next we stopped by the gear shop, Mountain Hardware to check out the list of trail angles in town. The ladies working we’re super friendly, giving us each a PCT pin for signing their register. We snapped a picture of the trail angel register to be revisited during our breakfast and headed to the post office.
Stretch and Alex both grabbed their packages before we headed across the street to the Grizzly Cafe for more food.
Once again I was blown away by how hiker friendly the town was. Our server was fantastic, the food came quick and was delicious.
I ordered the veggie omelette with hash browns, wheat toast and a coffee. All was fantastic!
During breakfast I texted the first trail angel, Sue, from the list we had procured. She got back to me quick and invited us all to stay the night. Perfect!
Housing locked in, next on the list was to resupply for the 5 days it would take to get to Agua Dulce, where we plan on staying at the famed Hiker Heaven run by the legendary Saufley family.
We hit up the local grocery store, Jensen’s.
It wasn’t cheap, but the selection was solid.
After checking out we made use of the picnic tables out front to prep our food bags in true hiker trash fashion.
Chores completed, beer was on our minds, so we cruised over to Wrightwood Brewery to test their products for research purposes only…
Their IPA was on point. It tasted almost as good as destroying Alex in connect for.
We enjoyed our beers from the comfort of their patio. It was a great place to kick back while watching the happenings of the small town.
Sue pulled up around 3, greeting each of us with a big hug before squeezing us into her black Charger. After the short drive to her house she gave the grand tour and made clear that her only rule was that we make ourselves at home. She was an incredible host.
Her husband Mike got home shortly after we had finished showering and laundering our clothes. He drove the four of us back into town to grab a bite and some beer at The Yodeler.
Like Sue, Mike was fantastic. Over beers he gave us details of what the trail would look like going forward.
The food was just alright…maybe I ordered the wrong thing, but the Enjoy By Double IPA by Stone Brewing was delicious.
Before long the bar was packed with hikers just off the trail. It was a nice reunion. I saw people I hadn’t seen since Mt Laguna (day 2) such as Swede Captain Awesome. We cashed out and cruised over to the Wrightwood Brewery for a final round.
Full of beer, food and conversation we piled back into Mikes car to make our way back home.
Alex and I crashed in their camper, while KP and Stretch were in a spare bedroom. Sue volunteered to drop me off at the trailhead on her way to work in the morning, so I set my alarm for 5 and hit the hay.
This is Alex’s dad Ken, Austin thank you so much for recording your daily adventures. I’m glad we can “hike” with you from the comfort of our houses. You’ve met some incredible “Trail Angels” and have no doubt cultivated some lifetime relationships. I pray each day and night that God will guide you, protect and keep you safe throughout your journey. Thanks again and don’t be afraid to leave some beer 🍺 for the next hikers ⛺️ to come through!😀
Hi Ken! Thanks for reading! We’ve been having an incredible time. Alex is crushing it! Cheers!
Why don’t we hear more about these incredible people that populate America??
So tired of reading/hearing about awful folks. These people you are meeting renew my faith in all🤗
You are so right the trail has so many kind folks supporting the hikers 😀. I look forward to them coming thru Oregon.
I agree! There’s a lot of good out there, everyone’s just too wrapped up in the negative!
Looks like Wrightwood did y’all right! How sweet that Sue hosted all 4 of you and rules that anyone should be able to follow with such a fine host.
That resupply just doesn’t look like enough food … hmmmm no wonder y’all eat big in town.
Again thanks for the great photos and the trail news. It’s so fun following y’all.
Keep safe 😀
It sure did! Mike and Sue were incredible hosts! Thanks for following, cheers!
You guys are killing it with good times, I envy you all! Even you worse days are be than our best days. You are doing it right by taking in all the trail has to offer. It just goes to prove there are still incredible people in our great country. Cheers! Drinking a beer in honor of all the trail angles tonight.
Thanks Leo! We definitely try to enjoy each town, as we’re working hard when we’re on the trail. Cheers!
Trail Angels not angles!
