Total Cost: $3198.50

Backpack and Sleep System:

  • Backpack – Superior Wilderness Designs 30L Frameless Pack
    • I switched out my Zpacks Arc Haul for this bad boy about 2000 miles into my PCT yo-yo and never looked back. It’s simple, compact and light. You can customize the heck out of it and the customer service at SWD kills. No complaints. Check out my full review here.
    • Weight: 14.5 oz
    • Cost: $175
  • Shelter – Zpacks Duplex
    • Awesome shelter. Perfect combination of lightweight, durability and comfort. Being able to fit all my gear inside and still have room to maneuver comfortably made living in this tent for a year a bit easier. Check out my full review here.
    • Weight: 19.5 oz
    • Cost – $600
  • Stakes – MSR Mini Groundhog Stakes (x9)
    • These worked fine. Not the lightest option out there, but great value and durability. I only needed 8 to pitch my tent, but for some reason I carry 9…
    • Weight: 0.35 oz x9 = 3.15 oz
    • Cost: $2.50 x9 = $22.50
  • Tent Poles – Zpacks Carbon Fiber Pole (x2)
    • They’re super light and break down small enough to be rolled up with my Duplex. I had one snap during a windy night, but I was able to repair it with a bit of duct top.
    • Weight: 2.5 oz
    • Cost: $29
  • Sleeping Quilt – Enlightened Equipment Revelation 20 Degree
    • Kept me warm on all but a few nights. Packs down small enough to fit inside an 8L dry bag along with my sleeping pad.
    • Weight: 19.18 oz
    • Cost: $280
  • Sleeping Pad – Therm-a-Rest Neoair Xlite Regular
    • At an R-value of 3.2, it kept me sleeping warm and comfortable throughout the hike. About 2000 miles in it sprung a leak, but REI replaced it no questions asked. It’s comfy.
    • Weight: 12 oz
    • Cost: $170

Worn Clothing:

  • Hiking Shirt – Smartwool Merino 150 Tee
    • These shirts aren’t cheap and only last about 2000 miles, but they’re comfortable, dry quick and are antimicrobial to help keep the hiker stench down.
    • Weight: 4.7 oz
    • Cost: $75
  • Hiking Shorts – Lululemon Surge 6”
    • I love these guys. Super comfy, incredibly durable and dry quick. 10 outa 10!

  • Shoes – Altra Lonepeaks 4.0
    • BEST SHOES EVER! Lightweight, solid traction, zero drop, wide toe box and comfy as hell.
    • Weight: 10 oz
    • Cost: $120
  • Socks – Darn Tough Hiker No-Show Light Cushion (x2)
    • Excellent wool socks with an incredible warranty. They aren’t cheap, but the lifetime warranty makes it worth it.

    • Cost: $16 x2 = $32
  • Hat – TOW Caps Arizona Trail Trucker Hat
    • My favorite piece of gear.

    • An excellent puffy that I wore pretty much every day. No complaints.
    • Weight: 7.8 oz
    • Cost: $350
  • Micro Fleece – Patagonia R1 Regulator Fleece Hoody
    • Great versatile fleece. It can be zipped up to your noes on cold morning, and zipped down to your belly when things start to heat up. The sleeves have thumb holes to help keep your hands warm and there’s a zippered chest pocket for easy phone storage.
    • Weight: 6.9 oz
    • Cost: $159
  • Gloves – Arc’teryx Venta Gloves
    • I was never a huge fan of these gloves. They deteriorated pretty quickly, didn’t work well in rain and were a pain to take on and off. I wouldn’t recommend them.
    • Weight: 1.8 oz
    • Cost: $69
  • Rain Jacket – Zpacks Vertice Jacket
    • Not cheap, but I’m still a fan. It’s super light, and has some neat features such as draw strings on the cuffs and hood, a convenient chest pocket and armpit vents to name a few.
    • Weight: 5.6 oz
    • Cost: $299

  • Water Treatment – Sawyer Squeeze
    • I rarely treat my water, but when I did this guy worked great.
    • Weight: 3 oz
    • Cost: $30
  • Water Bottle – Smartwater 1L x2
  • Spoon – Sea to Summit Alpha Light Spoon Long
    • A spoon… The long handle made it easy to eat from ziplocks without getting food all over my hands.
    • Weight: .4 oz
    • Cost: $9.95

Electronics:

  • Navigation – iPhone 7
  • Satellite Communication – InReach Mini
    • This little guy is rad. The phone app allows for seamless Bluetooth connection through your phone, making it easy to send texts and check weather conditions when out of cellular range.
    • Weight: 3.5 oz
    • Cost: $350
  • Portable Battery – Anker PowerCore 20,000
    • I can get about 7 full iPhone charges off this dude. It’s pretty heavy, but I think it’s worth having the extra battery life.
    • Weight: 13 oz
    • Cost: $60
  • USB Dual Wall Charger
    • This thing rocks. The double USB ports allowed me to charge my Anker and iPhone simultaneously while in town.
    • Weight: 2 oz
    • Cost: $10
  • Headlamp – Petzle Zipka
    • Love this lamp. It’s simple, compact and has a sweet retractable band that lets you rock it on your wrist while you’re sleeping so you’ve always got your light handy when the midnight tinkle hits.
    • Weight: 2.3 oz
    • Cost: $30

Dry Bags:

Winter Gear:

  • Pants – Rab Torque Pants
    • I picked up these guys in Mammoth to protect my legs from the painful post holing in the snowbound Sierra. They’re actually climbing pants, but I found them comfortable and functional as hiking pants.

    • Cost: $125
