PCT Day 137

Bushcamp to Bushcamp

34.6 miles

SoBo Mile 178.7

Total mileage 2831.3

I woke up exhausted. I needed another hour, but packed up anyways. By 5 we were beginning our ascent of Reds Pass.

We passed loads of tents on the way up. We must be getting close to the north bound bubble.

The top of the pass offered excellent vistas of the mountains to the north and south.

Pushing on, we followed a ridge for the next two hours before beginning a series of ups and downs that would last the remainder of the day.

Around noon we took a break on the grassy bank of this alpine lake. It was almost completely frozen two weeks ago when I passed it heading north.

From there, we continued passing loads of hikers heading to Canada, many of them we knew. It slowed us down, but it was nice catching up with old friends.

The last few hours to camp were pretty brutal. It was toasty out, so the exposed climbs really drained me.

When we reached camp we were both whipped. After setting up camp, I polished off the contents of my food bag before crashing hard. I fell asleep dreaming of town food and catching up with Spikes once we reached Stevens Pass the next morning.

Cheers!

  1. So green!

Such badasses greeting the nobo pack as you trek back to Campo. At least they get your intel on the detour

  2. Again pretty day of ups and downs. That marmot was a beast – he’s obliviously has some good dinners lately. Crazy on the frozen lake. Just imagine all the places you’ll see the ground verses snow. I bet it’s cool seeing the NOBOs – maybe a few bragging rights that you’ve been there and heading back to where you started 😀

  3. Well after catching up with 7 blogs I’m happy to know you are alive and well.
Somehow these pics are more awesome going south🙃
It’s amazing how many people you meet that are now companions in your adventure.
Be careful and love to Paige 😘

  4. Austin,

Still following you on Southbound PCT – great photos as ever. Good that you have found a companion for the SOBO journey, However, with all respect to your friend Airborne, he is just not as easy on the eyes (maybe it’s the beard) as Paige (Spikes). Her cheerful smile must have really brightened your day.

I saw Paige back in Mountain View, CA around midnight when her parents arrived home with Paige from Seattle (and Canada). I was house /dog sitting for them while they were away.

Paige looked great and positively glowing with legs like timber. How she is starting work in SoCal 5 days later I have no idea. I would need at least 2 weeks to re-acclimatize.

They say to really get to know someone, you should go camping together. So what does 100 + days on the PCT trail do for you?
    Can only be good.

Look forward to reading your blog, hopefully you make it to Mexico before all CA turns to cinder.

What a frightening year on the west coast.
    You be careful out there.

    John

    • Thanks Jon! Airborne isn’t as cute Paige, that’s for sure! But I’m glad to have a buddy out here! I’ll try to keep things interesting for you on my way south! Cheers!
