PCT Day 155

Bushcamp to Bushcamp

40.7 miles

Sobo mile 786.7

Total mileage 3439.3

I woke up at 5 to the sound of rain pattering off my tent. Good thing I’d battened down the hatches last night…After packing up my gear, I crawled out into the rainy night to tear down my tent. The water logged shelter weighed twice as much as normal, and I could feel it as I padded off into the cold, wet morning.

To get back to the trail I followed a paved road for a bit before turning off onto a dirt road and finally crossed a pair of train tracks to reach the PCT.

As I ascended into Diamond Peak Wilderness the slowly rising sun did nothing to fight off the cold creeping into my hands. Before long I’d lost all dexterity, making simple tasks such as using my phone or opening my pack nearly impossible.

The rain finally let up around 10, as I was descending Diamond Peak towards Summit Lake.

By the time I reached the lake it had turned into a gorgeous day.

Pushing on, the trail meandered up and down a series of nondescript mountains before arriving at Windigo Pass.

A massive water cache is maintained at the pass, so I took a moment to fill up before moving on.

From there, the trail climbed back up into a forest of skinny pines.

Just before 9pm I found a suitable spot to pitch my tent, and minutes later I was eating dinner. I’d barely eaten anything all day, so I was starved. Lately, whenever I eat my stomach twists up, followed by waves of nausea, so my new plan is to consume most of my calories at night, so I don’t have to deal with the pain while hiking.

Cheers!

  1. Just a thought at you know your body more than anyone but… you may be pushing yourself too hard but your body is conditioned enough to handle it. OR you aren’t getting enough calories and nutrients throughout the day so your stomach aches from eating. I would make fueling your body more of a priority. Maybe add some nuun electrolyte tablets. As a runner I know exhaustion can cause these symptoms and you mentioned you increased from 30 to 40 miles a day…. that’s hiking an ultra marathon every day.

On a different note and completely hypocritical to what I was just saying… what happened to the frosty IPAs in town lol

    • Thanks for the advice Kevin. I’m having it checked out today…hopefully it’s an easy fix. I miss the frosty IPAs as well, but there’s just no time for that anymore. Cheers!
