I woke up feeling surprisingly awesome. I think the ginormous nutritious dinner I’d had did me some good. Anyways, I packed my gear up and trotted off towards the trail.
The trail started off in a pleasant wooded area, but degraded quickly to a scorched wasteland of tree skeletons.
After spending a couple hours walking through the dead forest, I was glad when life returned as I approached Devils Peak.
The ascent was rough, but the top offered an awesome vista.
I spent the next few miles following an exposed ridge line, before plummeting back down into the woods. My stomach was twisted up from the protein bar I’d ate at the top, so my pace slowed.
Doing my best to ignore my aching tummy, I cranked out another ten miles before arriving at Christi’s Spring, home for the night.
While filling my bottle I thought back to how horrible the mosquitos had been in this section two months earlier. I can’t begin to describe how thankful I am that they aren’t around anymore.
I found a flat spot to pitch my tent and crawled in to munch down some dinner. I was astonished to find that the gas station style Italian sub I’d packed out from Mazama Village was not just good, but absolutely delicious!
Cheers!
Austin, here’s a crazy thought: have you considered going for a SOBO JMT FKT? The 72 mpd pace you & Paige did doing your 24 hr challenge would put you at 3 days. The current overall record is 2 days, 19.5 hours:

It would be a cinch to hitch down to Happy isles from Tuolumne. From there, you just hike like you’ve been hiking.
Haha man you’re trying to kill me!
The best way for him to do it would be to do it fully supported. The kCal needed for that effort is quite a bit, and with limited resupply points you’d want a few people in the back country to aid in the effort. That said, it isn’t a far off goal. 😀 Also, he’d want to go to as minimal pack as possible for the push.
Hahaha this is not going to happen!
What?! My cousin has completed the JMT in 95 hours. Fully supported. A few of us carried dry-ice containers with ice cream in so that he could get bulk calories. Also… ice cream at Keirsarge pass trail junction is a pretty rad thing.
If I slack packed it with full support I could probably give the FKT a run, but it would be at the risk of injuring myself for the remainder of the yo-yo.
Happy to notice dirty feet look surprisingly good. Must be new shoes🙃
Might not hear for a bit…..off to Shetland isles and Iceland and beyond.
Rest up and take care of your innards🙃. Lv u G
