When my alarm woke me at 4am I knew there was no way I could get up. I felt horribly ill, my stomach was twisted, head foggy and any movement made me cringe from nausea. An hour later I was forced from my tent by a code brown. I barely made it out of the campsite…
By 7am I finally felt well enough to begin moving. It had been a rough morning, I gotta figure out what’s wrong with me.
It was weird packing up with the sun fully raised. I’m normally out of bed by 5am at the latest, so getting such a late start was hard on me mentally.
I wish I could say that I improved as I hiked, but I’d be lying.
I’d traded the Marble Mountain Wilderness for the Russian Wilderness, but it was hard to enjoy the incredible vistas I hiked along.
I passed the road leading into Etna around 1. The temptation to hitch into town for a burger was real, but I needed to make miles, so pushed on.
Head down, I zombie walked most of the day, barely breaking 2.5 mph, but I was just happy to be walking. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to hike at all when I’d first woke.
To make matters worse, when I touched base with Paige I learned of a new fire burning ahead of me near Shasta that had 55 miles of trail closed. Great.
While making my way along a ridge line I felt something land on my hand. I looked down just in time to watch a wasp sting the snot out of me. Great.
Around 6 I stumbled into camp, ate and went to bed.
P.s. Sorry for the depressing day…but that’s just how it was. Not everyday is going to be fun, hopefully tomorrow will be better.
