PCT Day 168

Bushcamp to Bushcamp

33.6 miles

Sobo mile 1261.8

Total mileage 3914.4

By 5am I was making my way towards Burney Falls State Park, only 7 miles or so down the trail.

By seven I crossed over Lake Britton Dam and thirty minutes later I’d arrived at the junction to Burney Falls.

I was tempted to take the short side trail down to checkout the waterfall, but the general store wasn’t open yet, and I needed to make miles, so I decided against it.

From Burney Falls I walked a few more hours until I reached the junction to Burney Mountain Guest Ranch, where I was once again tempted to make a quick side trip for some ice cream, but the .8 mile detour was just too long, so I pulled out a protein bar and continued on.

A couple hours later I had a rather intimate encounter with a group of deer while resting on the banks of Baum Lake.

I filled up my bottle at the lake before heading off towards Hat Creek Rim.

This dry and exposed section of trail can be rather brutal in mid summer, but lucky for me it was a cool, slightly overcast day, so I found it enjoyable.

Around 6pm I reach Cache 22, a large water tank kept filled by an awesome local trail angel. Without this tank, this stretch of trail would require a good sized water carry. After filling up, I decided to camp there for the night. A quick dinner later and I was asleep.

Cheers!
