PCT Day 99

Bushcamp to Bushcamp

35.5 miles

Mile 1808.9

I woke up feeling refreshed and ready to hike. After packing up I filled my bottle at the stream before hitting the trail at 5.

Shortly after getting started a cloud of mosquitos descended upon me like the plague. I received bite after bite, despite my quick pace.

The horde followed me all day, preventing me from resting or taking many photos as I walked through woodlands. It was horrible…

Around 2 while hiking through a burn area I noticed a decrease in the mosquito population, so took my first and only break of the day.

Pushing on, the harassment continued as I made my way up and over Devils Peak.

After topping my bottles off at a mosquito infested creek, I banged out the final few miles to camp through a badly burned section of trail.

The trail was in rough shape from a recent burn, but by 5 I’d arrived at my destination. I was beyond pleased so find that the location we’d picked for our campsite not only shaded, but mosquito free!

While setting up camp Spikes arrived, and together we dug into our dinners. We decompressed to some post dinner Netflix before passing out.

Cheers!

  1. Mosquitoes are the absolute worst! Personally I’d rather take my chances with rattlers and bears!
Did you try any counter measures like long sleeves and pants, deet spray, or head net? Just curious to know if any work.
Were you swatting at them like a mad man? Glad to hear you found sanctuary from them at camp!

    • Yeah they suck! Deet helps, but it’s bad for gear, so I try to use it sparingly. We heard the skeeters in Washington weren’t so bad, so we’re hailin ass trying to get there!

  2. Hey Austin –

I’m following a few other blogs. EVERYONE is blogging about mosquitoes! They sound ravenous and relentless. I recall Spikes having a head to toe net thing. I hope that is helping her.

I received your card. Snickerdoodle: 5 stars! I’m hooked.

Keeping knocking out those big miles. O Canada.

    Cheers, RZ

    • Hey Roger,

The skeeters are pretty bad, but I’ll take them over snow!

Glad you got the card and enjoyed the cookie. It’s magical.

      Cheers!

  3. The mosquitos would do me in. I agree with Dave on that issue. Don’t think it was one of your better days but you did it without needing a blood transfusion. Proud of your tanasite O 🇨🇦.
