Te Araroa – Day 44

Bushcamp to Bushcamp

21.8 miles

Mile 1271.2

I spent my morning walking along a 4wd track through a grassy river valley.

My easy morning was made even nicer by the overcast skies, keeping me cool and sunburn free.

Around noon I reached the St. James Walkway, leaving the 4wd track for a pleasant tramping trail.

Shortly after joining the trail I passed by Anne Hut, and continued over Anne River and up Anne Saddle. Not sure who Anne is though…

While taking a break at a river to swim, I noticed a gaping hole in the side of one of my shoes. The cloth siding had ripped away from the sole, leaving a gash about 3 inches long straight into the foot box. Damn.

I only have about 400 miles on this pair, and have gotten more than twice that distance without problem before. I’ve got another pair waiting for me in Wanaka, but that’s still 500ish miles off…hopefully I can make due until then.

Pushing on, I tore up another 10 miles or so before making camp on a ridge above a river.

Cheers!
