Bushcamp to Lake Tekapo
15 miles
Mile 1478.3
I packed up my tent and got moving as the sun slowly began to rise above the mountains.
The trail continued along the hills running the length of Lake Tekapo.
Eventually the trail ended at a road that led me into Lake Tekapo village.
The small tourist town was bustling with eager site-seers. I needed WiFi to find a hotel for the night, so I found a cafe to post up in. Everything in town was completely booked, there was nothing available at any price. It was looking like the shower and warm bed I’d been looking forward to wasn’t going to happen…
In the town notes on Guthooks, the app I use for navigation, I read that one of the hostels in town kept a “hiker room” for TA walkups. It was my only hope, so I headed over to Tailor Made Backpackers to investigate. Sure enough they had one bunk left in the shared two bunk “hiker room”. Such luck!!!
My bunk mate for the night was a dude from the Cook Islands named James. He was friendly enough, we talked trail and gear for a bit before I headed over to the Four Square to grab some grub and a resupply.
When I got back to the hostel I spent the rest of the evening getting organized, doing laundry and most importantly, eating.
Cheers!
