Bushcamp to Hillbilly’s Place
19 miles
Mile 209.6
Enjoyed an epic night of sleep. Got moving around 6 to catch the sunrise and journal a bit.
The day began with 12 miles of switchbacks down the north side of San Jacinto. It was rough on the knees, but we made quick progress and the views were incredible.
We crossed the 200 mile marker, which was neat.
Then I saw some sort of snake.
Then came the wildflowers.
When we reached the base of the mountain we had a short road walk before getting back on a trail for the final miles.
When we reached the I10 underpass we signed the wall and gave the local trail angel, Hillbilly a call. I’d be remiss not to mention the fact that I found his number written on the underpass wall…
He picked up the phone immediately, and after a short chat sent his neighbor to pick us up. We had a quick road walk to the pickup location.
Hillbilly welcomed us with a shot of moonshine that may or may not have been rubbing alcohol by the burn it gave my gut. Initiated, we left our packs at his house and took an Uber to the local casino to hit up the Fatburger joint within it’s food court.
Waking into the casino was weird. The neon lights, loud noises and bustling people were a shock to the senses. Unperturbed, we made our way to the burger joint and hungrily put in our orders. Minutes later I was feasting on a fatburger, chili cheese fries, Diet Coke and two scoops of ice cream for dessert.
Satisfies from the tasty dinner, we got a ride back to Hillbilly’s where three other hikers had since arrived. I got there just in time to watch one hiker drain a massive blister on his foot.
We spent the remainder of the evening enjoying beers and conversation. It was a good night, and completely unexpected!
Hillbilly made our Easter one to remember!
P.s. I got my trail name today! A lot happened today…so I’ll save the story for tomorrow. I promise!
Cheers!
